• NNTP - Pan news reader

From Amessyroom@1:103/705 to All on Fri Jul 4 11:31:52 2025
Testing PAN news reader on linux. I have successfully connected it
to news servers, but when using it with toolazy.synchro.net via NNTP

I cannot retreive articles. I can get group list, subscribe, and see headers.

But when I select an article, it records the following in
    event log.

Article "Re: Multimail" is incomplete -- the news server(s) don't have part <6858144B.18520.dove-hlp@vert.synchro.net>

Any ideas why PAN cannot retreive the articles?

I don't remember having issues with PAN but I may not have tried connecting to my BBS with it. Have you tried SLRN to see if you have the same problem?

Look at the BBS log output (from the Synchronet Services server, running nntpservice.js) - that'll likely provide some clues. You can enable more (e.g. debug-level) log output too.

I don't, But maybe you can test with Thunderbird or another nntp client.
I already use it whitout problems.

I'll give slrn a try; doesn't seem to be in epel so may have to download it from github or elsewhere.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

Wonder if having BBS and Usenet servers listed in config; confuses PAN.

May try removing usenet servers; and only have bbs and see if it makes a difference.

Thunderbird doesn't seem to have any issues. PAN gets the above !no such group message, when I select on an article for it to be downloaded.

This is with debug on for Services Server. I'll dig further but with another client working, makes PAN seem suspect.

slrn worked as did thunderbird. so there must be something between PAN and synchronet nntp that is not compatible. I have two working options, so appreciate the feedback.

I'll see if I can determine issue, but at this point i know it seems to be unique to PAN. I did remove other news servers to be sure it wasn't getting confused between the other servers. But still got error in event log and got no such file error on the synchronet side.

    Jul 4 22:27:28 vmi1943160 synchronet[240297]: srvc 0172 NNTP !no such group

It's weird that the client is sending "Xref" as an argument of the GROUP command - that should be the name of a newsgroup, but "Xref" likely is not.

    Jul 4 22:27:45 vmi1943160 synchronet[240297]: srvc 0186 NNTP cmd: MODE READER Jul 4 22:27:49 vmi1943160 synchronet[240297]: srvc 0186 NNTP cmd: MODE READER

Yeah, it's doing something weird. I'm not sure if there's something unique about the Synchronet nntpservice that's triggering that behavior, but it does seem unexpected.
