• School's out for summer!

From MeaTLoTioN@1337:1/101 to All on Sat Jul 19 12:32:59 2025
    Hey folks!

I hope you're all doing well. Yesterday was the last day of school for my daughter and now it's the summer hols for her. This time of year mean I get to spend more time with her and get to do some cool stuff.

What cool stuff have you got planned for your kids or just yourselves over the summer period?

Not too far away from me there is a miniature railway called the Romney Hythe and Dymnchurch Railway, that's a fun one that my daughter and I like to go to each summer. It runs from Hythe, going through New Romney, Dymnchurch and ending up at Dungeness.

At Dungeness is a no longer running nuclear power station, a light house (which we like to climb each visit) and a nice restaurant we get lunch at. On the way back we stop at Dymnchurch and go to the arcades and amusements, get fish and chips (or a sausage and chips is preferable as I don't like fish :P), then head to New Romney and see the model railway inside the station, and see all the other old trains there. Then finally heading back to Hythe and a drive home after. It's such a cool day out. Highly recommend it if any of you are ever in this area looking for something fun to do.

Here's a wikipedia link to the railway; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romney,_Hythe_and_Dymchurch_Railway

    Here's their website;
    https://www.rhdr.org.uk/

Lots of fun for the whole family.

Enjoy your summer whatever you get up to, and hope you all have lovely weather for it. It's been lush here for weeks now,
although we finally had a huge downpour last night with loads of lightning and thunder. Air is a little cooler today.

Well they have a mix but I believe the main sizes are 0 gauge and 00 gauge, but they have some tracks that are like the really teeny tiny gauge and a small section that is probably 4" wide but I have no idea what gauge that would be.

When we go I will try and get some good pictures and some video to share =)

Hard to say. IIRC, 00 gauge is close to the US HO scale, which is what I
am most familiar with. O is popular here, too. 4" wide might be G scale.

LOL! That could be interesting for sure.

I actually thought there was a power station and a train station, but I
think I misread it... the model railway is in the old power station, while
the old train station is a figment of my immagination. ;)

I hope you're all doing well. Yesterday was the last day of school for my daughter and now it's the summer hols for her. This time of year mean I get to spend more time with her and get to do some cool stuff.

Congrats to your kid! Enjoy a great summer!

What cool stuff have you got planned for your kids or just yourselves over the summer period?

My oldest daughter graduated from high school this past June, and turned 19 last week, and has college registration to look forward to this week. My other one is 16 years old and is getting her driver's license soon and started working at one of the movie theaters in the area. We're starting to shop around for a used car for her to get to work and school in the fall.

We managed to squeeze in a couple camping trips so far, and may take another one sometime in the next month. The missus and I have our 20th anniversary coming up as well.

So it's been QUITE the eventful summer. :)

My plan is the one I have every summer. I am taking my girls to eat grass in different places around my house. I never understood why people has so much trouble convincing their kids to eat their vegetables, because mine will grow fat from eating too much if you let them.

Well down under, mid-year school holidays are coming to the end. While is been cold/wet in Melbourne - and 10-12 degrees during the day, I've actually been with my kids in Malaysia, for the last 3 weeks where every day has been around 32. Humidity sucks.

Kids have been playing tennis at a tennis academy here - hosted in an English international school - Epsom College. They've been boarding at the college, while my wife and I have been in an AirBNB 20klm away.

This weekend is the end of the training, with a tournament today/tomorrow and monday - after which we'll head to KL for a couple of days before heading back home.

Its been good. I've had 3 weeks off to catch up on many todo things that I've wanted to do, but time never really gave me the opportunity.

I'm back at work on Friday, not looking forward to that - Ive kinda enjoyed 3 weeks off not thinking about it...

I didn't think it got that cold "down under".

I heard that. Much of the US has been under some wicked heat over the past month with temps in the upper 30s, even 40. In Michigan, where I am, we've had days a few days around 35 or so with humidity in the 90% range...YUCK!
