    The European Space Agency has signed the first contracts under its European Launcher Challenge, committing 543.6 million to three European rocket
    startups as it tries to broaden the continents launch options beyond Ariane 6 and Vega-C.

    ESA announced awards to Germanys Isar Aerospace (197.8 million), Rocket Factory Augsburg (186.9 million), and Spains PLD Space (158.9 million). A fourth contract with ArianeGroup subsidiary MaiaSpace is still being
    finalized and is expected to resume in the coming weeks.





    This milestone kicks off the European Launcher Challenge, encouraging competition among European launch providers, said ESA Space Transportation Director Graldine Naja.

    The program is designed to give Europe more competitive, cost-effective
    access to space by supporting new commercial launchers rather than
    prescribing a single agency-led vehicle.

    Interest was stronger than ESA originally expected. At the November 2025 ministerial council in Bremen, member states more than doubled ESAs proposed 420 million envelope, committing about 902 million.

    The money is not a blank check, with each contract split into two parts. Component A covers operational launch services through 2030, but only after a company reaches orbit by the end of 2027. Component B co-funds vehicle upgrades that must be demonstrated by the end of 2028. Funding is released as milestones are met.

    The shortlist was first announced in July 2025, before the program was fully funded. Five companies advanced from 12 proposals. One of those five is gone.

    Rocket Factory Augsburg RFA One:

    RFAs three-stage RFA One is about 30 meters tall and 2.15 meters in diameter. In its current configuration it is designed to deliver up to 500 kilograms to a 500-kilometer sun-synchronous orbit from SaxaVord Spaceport in the Shetland Islands.



    The 186.9 million contract is funded mainly by Germany, with a contribution from the United Kingdom.

    The company is preparing for its first launch attempt and has said it will
    use the award to develop RFA One Block 2, expand ground infrastructure, and prepare for serial production.

    Isar Aerospace Spectrum:

    Spectrum is a two-stage vehicle designed for about 700 kilograms to SSO or 1,000 kilograms to low Earth orbit.

    Its first flight from Andya Spaceport in Norway in 2025 lasted only seconds before the rocket was lost. A second vehicle has been in a prolonged campaign for Flight 2, Onward and Upward, which is intended as a qualification flight carrying CubeSats and an attached experiment.

    Multiple windows in 2026 have slipped; the company is still working toward that second attempt. Isar says the ESA funds will also accelerate next-generation vehicle work and expand test and launch infrastructure.

    PLD Space Miura 5:

    Spains PLD Space was awarded 158.9 million, funded mainly by Spain with a German contribution. Miura 5 is designed to deliver up to 540 kilograms to
    SSO from Europes Spaceport in French Guiana.



    PLD previously flew the suborbital Miura 1 successfully and is working toward a first orbital flight of Miura 5 this year.

    The company plans to use the contract both to ramp commercial launch cadence through 2030 and to fund upgrades for heavier payloads, higher orbits, and propulsive landing as a first step toward reuse.

    MaiaSpace still unsigned

    MaiaSpace is the remaining challenger. Unlike the others, it designed its first rocket for reuse from the outset.

    In reusable configuration it is in the same roughly 500-kilogram-to-SSO class as its competitors; expended, ESA and company materials have pointed to a higher payload of about 1,500 kilograms.



    Maia is targeting a first orbital attempt no earlier than the second half of 2027, uncomfortably close to the programs orbit-before-2028 requirement. ESA says contract talks are nearing completion.

    Scotlands Orbex was among the original five finalists but entered administration in February 2026 after fundraising and acquisition talks collapsed. It received no contract. Assets tied to its planned Sutherland spaceport have since been sold.

    With the first contracts signed, the European Launcher Challenge has moved from paper to hardware. The next milestone is harder: a successful orbital launch before 2028.

    Isar has already made one unsuccessful orbital attempt and is preparing another. PLD has suborbital flight heritage with Miura 1, but Miura 5 is a different vehicle. RFA still has its first flight ahead of it. Maias schedule leaves little margin if anything slips.
