With Rocket Lab targeting to launch its Neutron vehicle by the end of this year, the company is rapidly clearing milestones in the vehicles development.
Neutrons Hungry Hippo fairing has completed all testing and integration of
key subsystems, meanwhile, the company has performed hundreds of Archimedes engine hot-fires in preparation for Neutrons debut. The company has also signed multiple contracts including one with the U.S. Space Forces Space Systems Command.

The companys innovative Hungry Hippo fairings are permanently attached to the first stage of Neutron, and open during flight to deploy the second stage. On Aug. 27, Rocket Lab announced that the Hungry Hippo section of the vehicle had completed all its necessary testing before the first flight. The test campaign included the opening and closing of the halves in flight-like conditions.
Earlier in the month, the company reported that the fairing had received all its required subsystems, including its thermal protection, control surfaces, and avionics. The fairing has now been moved back to the hangar at the facility in Wallops awaiting Neutrons interstage.
Like Electron, Neutrons stages and fairings are primarily constructed from carbon fiber composite materials. Rocket Lab manufactures the vehicles large composite structures in-house, using a 90-ton Automated Fiber Placement machine. The 43-meter (141-foot) rocket will deliver at least 13,000 kg to low-Earth orbit in a reusable configuration featuring propulsive first-stage landing on a specialized barge located downrange. Moreover, Rocket Lab claims the capability to launch 1,500 kg to Mars and Venus.
In addition to downrange landings, the first stage will be capable of return-to-launch-site landings. However, the company does not plan to recover any stages on the first flight, which will instead focus on data collection.
Neutrons first stage features nine oxygen-rich staged combustion Archimedes engines powered by methane (CH4) and liquid oxygen (LOX), a propellant combination also known as methalox. The vehicle will be capable of producing
a total of 6,450 kilonewtons (1,450,000 lbf) of thrust during liftoff.
Rocket Lab designed the second stage to hang inside Neutrons interstage, so the stages tanks are not required to carry the main flight loads, allowing
for a lighter construction. Neutrons upper stage will be propelled by a
single vacuum-optimized Archimedes engine, also powered by methalox.

In another August announcement, Rocket Lab disclosed that its Archimedes engine had completed over 400 hot-fire tests. Control and durability have now been confirmed across flight hardware for all major engine components. The company also revealed that the first engines for the debut of Neutron are currently in production.
The vehicle will launch from Launch Complex 3 at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport (MARS) on Wallops Island in Virginia, which was completed in 2025. The launch site has a 30-foot launch mount, which masses over 700 tons and is operated by hydraulic systems. The complex also has 180,000-gallon LOX and liquefied natural gas (LNG) propellant farms and 45,000 gallons of stored liquid nitrogen. Additionally, the pad features an over 200-foot water supply tower, capable of storing over 200,000 gallons of water for launch
activities.

As well as preparing for its inaugural Neutron flight and launching its Electron vehicle at a high cadence, Rocket Lab has also signed multiple contracts recently for satellite development. The company stated it had been chosen as one of the partners for the U.S. Space Force Space Systems Commands Space Data Network (SDN).
The SDN is a next-generation military communications architecture, for which Rocket Lab will develop and test communications systems. Additionally, the company will perform an on-orbit demonstration of optical and network capabilities with one of its Photon satellites. Viasat, a communications satellite company, also selected Rocket Lab to develop a geosynchronous satellite bus for the Space Systems Command that
will deliver Viasats Swarm 1 under the Protected Tactical SAT-Global program. The GEO bus will utilize Rocket Labs high-performance Lightning-GEO platform.
As Rocket Lab shifts from a small-sat pioneer to a medium-lift contender, the launch of Neutron will mark a key turning point for the company.
